Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest, how to deal with depression has always been a challenge for some. Also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities, and sometimes you may feel as if life isn’t worth living.
That was a definition I came across when I was reading several articles on depression. It is very sad when someone you care about is suffering from depression, you know in your heart that this is not the character of the person you are with but a true illness of the mind. More than just a bout of the blues, depression isn’t a weakness and you can’t simply “snap out” of it. Depression may require long-term treatment. But don’t get discouraged. Most people with depression feel better with medication, psychological counselling or both.
The real issue is when the person you are with is experiencing depression and is in denial which was what John was experiencing with his partner. She just stopped doing for him and when he asked about her state of mind, it was a constant defence of not being accepted. The environment was dirty all the time, he would go to work for 6 days out of the week and would come home to a dirty house, a dirty wife, crying kids who were not fed all day and the minute he said anything to her, she would burst out crying.
It is important to note that when a person gets to a certain point when the feeling of depression is there, the first move to make is to set up an appointment to see your doctor. If you’re reluctant to seek treatment, talk to a friend or loved one, a health care professional, a faith leader, or someone else you trust.
John messed up big time when he realized that something was wrong with his wife, he had already gone on an all-out attack on her, so nothing he suggested was making any sense to her, as far as she was concerned he hated her guts! how to deal with depression was something John had no knowledge about, so the first step is to learn as much as you possibly can.
I will say this to John’s wife…
If you think you may hurt yourself or attempt suicide, call your local emergency number immediately.

If a loved one or friend is in danger of attempting suicide or has made an attempt:
- Make sure someone stays with that person
